Founded by English immigrant John Sands in 1837, the John Sands company operated a stationery and publishing business in George Street, Sydney from which magazines, books and maps were sold throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. From the 1960s to the 1990s, the John Sands business also distributed board games in Australia, toys such as Transformers and GI Joe, and electronics including the Sega SG-1000.
Golden Age Maps has acquired several maps from John Sands' "The New Atlas of Australia", one of the first Atlases of the colonies published in Australia, published in 1886. Maps include regions from pre-Federation Australia, including the colonies of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
