This vellum leaf is from an early Breviary written in northern France or Flanders, circa 1300 AD. Breviaries were among the first written texts published in Europe, describing the regulations for the celebration of Catholic mass. Each page would be meticulously hand-written on pages of vellum (carefully prepared from animal skins) and decorated, sometimes with ornate pictures and highlighted with golf leaf.

The text is written in a single column (21 lines) in a clear Gothic book hand in black and red ink. There is one large initial in red and blue ink, with a decorative border extending into the margins on verso. Beginning with the large "M" on verso, the text includes part of Psalm 51, which translates as:

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity."

Sold framed with UV protective glass.
