Rare, large, 4 sheet wall map of the Empire of Charlemagne by Petrus Bertius, published in Atlas Novus by Blaeu in 1658. Charlemagne (Charles the Great) was King of the Franks and Lombards and first Holy Roman Emperor, ruling over much of modern-day France, Germany, Austria and Italy in the 8th and 9th Centuries.
Fully engraved with mountains, forests, and cities, the map extends from the Iberian Peninsula and Ireland to the Black Sea and the Turkish Aegean coastline. Includes the Balearides, Sicily, Sardinia, Malta, Corscia and all of Greece. The map includes a decorative title cartouche with coat of arms and putti, and a lovely compass rose.
